Every year on 18 July-the day Nelson Mandela was born-the UN joins a call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others as a way to mark Nelson Mandela International Day.
For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity-as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa.
How the Day came about
In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18 July “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the former South Africa President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
General Assembly resolution A/RES/64/13 recognizes Nelson Mandela’s value and his dedication to the service of humanity, in the fields of conflict resolution, race relations, the promotion and protection of human rights, reconciliation, gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, as well as the upliftment of poor and underdeveloped communities. It acknowledges his contributions to the struggle for democracy internally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.
To expand and sustain the essence of this special day, Mandela Legacy Centre for Leadership and Development a non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in keeping with the ideals of the late world icon and specifically to uphold quality leadership and promote enduring development in Africa, is putting up a dinner event where participants will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on the life, times and legacies of the world icon, and in line with the team, “Action Against Poverty” provide a platform for African leaders, international mediators and negotiators, researchers, policy makers, development practitioners and writers on African issues, to dialogue and debate on critical issues of poverty and development in the continent with emphasis on building a strong and virile Africa. It will be an avenue for shinning the spotlight on trends, opportunities and challenges while sharing experiences and best practices for the overall benefit of all.
With a handful number of people still living in extreme poverty (less than $1.90 per day) especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America and with the recent revelation of the world poverty clock that Nigeria will soon overtake India as the world poverty capital, the event seeks to promote new, alternative and cutting edge thinking on poverty and development challenges that faces the developing nations and particularly Africa. The outcome of this discourse will also be codified into policy notes, briefs and think pieces.
The forum shall further climax into a glamorous networking session, showcase of the African traditions, cultures and styles as well as opportunities to unwine in a special VIP gala dinner, reminiscent of the African hospitality.
