CONFLICT SENSITIVE COMMUNICATION AND STRATEGIC MEDIA RELATIONS FORUM

Communicating peace and conflict can be crucial in serving peace building purposes. Over the past decade, digital technologies have created new opportunities for the inclusion of individuals in communication activities. At the same time, several challenges have emerged, especially in the military environment, such as issues of confidentiality, credibility, trust, privacy, and security. There is therefore a compelling need for spokespersons and information officers in that sector to continue to upscale their capacity to navigate the challenges of communication in conflict-prone environments, minimize harm, and promote positive social change. This involves understanding how communication can escalate or de-escalate conflict, and utilizing media effectively to foster peace, understanding and proactively manage information within the ambit of acceptable global standard.

Who Is This Program Designed For?

This experiential training and capacity building workshop is designed for leaders, information managers, members of the civil-military relations team, military spokes persons and public relation officers, members of the strategic communications teams and all who are looking at how a combination of best practice, people leadership approaches and innovation are currently being combined with state-of-the-art initiatives to manage tension, de-escalate conflict and take over control situations.

Learning Objectives

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • learn how to use media effectively to promote positive narratives, counter misinformation, and build bridges;
  • identify key stakeholders and tailor communications to specific audiences, considering their social, political, and linguistic diversity;
  • evaluate potential risks associated with communication efforts and develop strategies to mitigate negative consequences;
  • develop crisis communication plans and manage media responses during challenging situations;
  • design and implement promotion and awareness campaigns for peacebuilding initiatives;
  • select and plan strategies sensitive to a changing and uncertain environment and manage risks effectively.
